Kolkata is my birthplace. It is our hometown, a place that we love dearly. Many memories of mine are associated with Kolkata since my childhood. Kolkata is also known as the City of Joy and that is very rightly said as if going to the road of Kolkata will see big buildings in almost every lane he passes through.  Is my city my home? It stirs up my emotion. It’s steaming up my soul.

Kolkata is rich in heritage and is full of interesting places interspersed in every corner of the city. We have traveled to many places and written about them as well. Sovabazar Rajbari

This is one of the oldest royal houses, famous historical places in the city, was constructed by Raja Nabakrishna Deb, a prominent aristocrat of the city. This palatial structure is best known today for the iconic Durga Puja celebrations that take place in October-November.

History:

A few of the notable features of this monument are the Nat Mandap, which is a centrally located open courtyard. It is supported by columns that are adorned with arches. It has a square base, the courtyard was once a venue for special functions and celebrations. There are double-story wings on either side of the courtyard that connects the mandap with Naach Ghar, which is now in ruins. Victoria Memorial:

Victoria Memorial

One of the landmarks of Kolkata, Victoria Memorial is a grand British-era structure built entirely of white marble. Though, Constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style, using a mix of British and Mughal elements, the memorial draws influences from Islamic, Venetian, Egyptian, and Deccani styles.

History:

Dedicated to Queen Victoria of England, it was constructed between 1906 and 1921 by the Prince of Wales (who went on to become King George V). Today, the memorial has been turned into a museum that has 25 galleries. It also houses paintings from the British Raj, along with memorabilia and manuscripts.

Features:

There are paintings of the queen and Prince Albert in the Royal Gallery, along with artworks depicting events from the queen’s life. A 16-foot-tall bronze statue – the figure of the Angel of Victory – stands atop the grand building – on the central dome. It is mounted on ball bearings and revolves around the wind. Moreover, The main building sits amidst over 64 acres of gardens. A national leaders’ gallery with paintings of Indian freedom fighters, along with several relics, was added to the Victoria Memorial, post-India’s Independence. The Victoria Memorial stands on the Maidan (grounds) on the banks of the Hooghly river. Nearby is the well-known Chowringhee Road or Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

The Victoria Memorial is being maintained by the Ministry of Culture. For a real feel of the colonial era, when Kolkata’s culture thrived under the patronage of rich businessmen, a class of educated and elite gentlemen, locally known as bhadrolok, take a ride in the horse-drawn carriages. And make rounds in front of the memorial. As the horses trot through broad roads, with the majestic Victoria Memorial in the backdrop, it’s easy to travel back in time.

Indian Museum:

Indian Museum:

This was one of my favorite places in Kolkata. Located at the west end of Sudder Street, the Indian Museum is the largest and oldest museum in India. However, It features a variety of exhibits showcasing antiques, ornaments, fossils, weapons, mummies, and paintings. You can easily spend a couple of hours here. In addition, you visit the museum with us but many of the same city tours that take you to Victoria Memorial will make a stop at the Indian Museum as well.

Belur Math:

Belur Math:

It is the headquarters of Ramkrishna Math and Mission and represents the idea of Universal faith. The mind behind Belur math was Swami Vivekananda, the famous disciple of Sri Ramkrishna, who had taken the message of Hinduism to the western world. However, The temple is noted for combining Christian, Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist architectural elements to symbolize unity among religions.

History:

Belur Math is about 7-8 km north of Howrah Bridge. . Belur Math is also located on the banks of the Hooghly River. Therefore, It is regarded as a “Symphony in architecture” as it combines Hindu, Islamic, Christian, and Buddhist architectural elements to symbolize the unity of religion.

Belur Math is quite a serene place where you can spend some time sitting, meditating. The peace in the Belur Math campus would be quite a pleasant experience.
